A selection of headlines from stories in the news. They use English in a way that you might think is intended to confuse but it’s all perfectly clear to the native speaker.

Whatever could they mean? ‘Your Cave….Or Mine?’ is a saucy headline from the Daily Mirror. The paper reports that cavemen were more randy than people today – because they had long ring fingers. Scientists have measured the length of fossilised digits as it indicates a species’ promiscuity. A longer ring finger, in comparison to the index one, suggests a high level of testosterone which is linked to sex drive and aggression. Research for the Royal Society found that the fingers of Neanderthals and early humans showed they were more promiscuous than us.

The headline is a play on the chat up phrase, “Your place or mine?”.
