The President of the Philippines, Gloria Arroyo, said that schools nationwide must revert to using English as the medium of instruction to make Filipinos globally competitive.

“If we really want to compete globally, we have to bring back English as our medium of instruction because that is the language of technology,” Mrs. Arroyo said in her speech at the Froilan D. Lopez Technical and Vocational High School in Camarines Norte.

The President also asked the Education Department to sustain the National English Proficiency Program to benefit about half a million teachers who needed a refresher course in English.
