English In Use - "Grad Rags"

A selection of headlines from stories in the news. They use English in a way that you might think is intended to confuse but it's all perfectly clear to the native speaker.

The full headline in this story in the Metro is "Now four-year-olds are wearing their grad rags".  It appears on a story that children in nurseries are attending "graduation" ceremonies prior to going to primary school, complete with mortar and gown it sounds like a nice money spinner for someone.

The use of "grad", short for "graduation", "rags" is a play on the term "glad rags", which is a term used to describe your best clothes, or clothes for a special occasion.
