English in Use - Flush Puppy

A selection of headlines from stories in the news.  They use English in a way that you might think is intended to confuse, but it's all perfectly clear to the native speaker.

'Flush Puppy' is a headline from the Daily Mirror.  The story is about a week-old cocker spaniel puppy, who was the subject of an emergency rescue after being accidentally flushed down his owner's toilet.  The tiny pooch was trapped in a waste pipe for almost four hours after four-year-old Daniel Blair decided he "needed a wash" in the loo and pulled the chain.  The headline used is a take on "Hush Puppy" a popular brand of shoe in the UK, but when you pull the chain / handle of a toilet, you "flush" it.

You'll be glad to know, the puppy is fine.
