English In Use - Veggies Mushroom

A selection of headlines from stories in the news. They use English in a way that you might think is intended to confuse but it's all perfectly clear to the native speaker.

A story about how more people in the UK are eschewing meat and that it has been predicted that 1 in 4 Brits will be vegetarian by 2050 led the Daily Mirror to come up with the headline "Veggies Mushroom".

Veggie is short for vegetable, and vegetarian.  In this headline veggies means vegetarians, and of course veggies eat a lot of  mushrooms. However, mushroom can be used as a verb - to mushroom, which means to increase. Hence the headline.
