English In Use - Stewdent Union

A selection of headlines from stories in the news. Newspapers often use English in a way that you might think is intended to confuse but it's all perfectly clear to the native speaker.

 Students

According to the Sun, Cambridge University students have been complaining that the names used in some of the college's dining menus are racist.

Jamaican Stew and Tunisian Rice were two of the "racist" meals mentioned.  One student told the catering staff to stop mixing mango and beef and calling it ‘Jamaican stew'.  I wonder if they serve "Hawaian Pizza".

A  students' union, is a student led organization present in many universities in the UK, and the Sun changed the spelling of student to stewdent.

(Interestingly, in 2016 students at Cambridge complained about an African-themed dinner which was based on the Lion King. Calling it  'cultural appropriation'.)
