An Introduction to Ergonomics

Active Image

Ergonomics is the science of adjusting your work environment to fit your body and make it as comfortable and healthy as possible. Despite its 51-year history as a branch of science, ergonomics (often referred to as "human factors" or "human engineering") is frequently disregarded as a part of office safety. But proper ergonomics will help you eliminate the problems associated with Repetitive Strain Injuries.

RSI (Repetitive Strain Injuries) are more often a result of bad posture while operating a computer than any other tool operation in the workplace. Unlike carpal tunnel syndrome, which is a diagnosis, RSI is a description that encompasses many diagnoses including carpal tunnel syndrome, ulnar nerve entrapment, deQuervain's syndrome, thoracic outlet syndrome, tennis elbow, and tendonitis.

My Dabble Into Landscape Painting

Active Image

by Andrew Caxton

My dabble into landscape painting showed me how much fun it can be to be creative.

When I was a small child, I would rise at the first light of dawn. I could not sleep past six, even when my parents begged and pleaded with me to just sleep a little longer. After they came to the conclusion that my internal clock was on its own time schedule, they decided that I could go ahead and get up, as long as I quietly watched television. This sounded good, but in reality, there was really nothing on at six on a Sunday morning. One morning, though, I came across a show with a strange French guy who was painting landscapes with oil paints.

Show a Little Respect

Show a Little Respect

by Patrick O'Connor

IN common with most football grounds recently, Derby County held a minute’s silence before their English League Cup game against Leeds United as a tribute to those who lost their lives fighting for their country.

As a few noisy Leeds latecomers entered the stand, the more senior visiting fans shouted out “Sshhh…..show some respect.”

And respect – or rather the perceived lack of it – was at the heart of a bitter exchange of words in the Rugby League World Cup Group A clash between England and New Zealand in Australia.

Business Gifts At Christmas

Active Image

Christmas is a time for giving and that applies to businesses as much as it does to private individuals. Many entrepreneurs and business owners like to demonstrate their gratitude to those who have contributed to the success of their company by giving appropriate gifts. But, it is very important to consider what to give, as any gift must be appropriate and avoid giving any offense.

YOU can happily trawl the Internet for hours looking for quotations to define happiness.

All areas of the philosophical spectrum can be found there.

Some of my favourites are: “Nobody really cares if you’re miserable, so you might as well be happy”; “Happiness is your dentist telling you it won’t hurt and then having him catch his hand in the drill”; and “I am a kind of paranoiac in reverse, I suspect people of plotting to make me happy.”

Another one, which is attributed to the American cartoonist Berke Breathed, and which could easily be adopted as the clarion call of the Disney corporation, is: “It’s never too late to have a happy childhood.”

Disney believe that they can make your dreams come true and thereby attempt to cascade you in happiness.
