Today's Lesson - Titanic the movie

In today's lesson we discussed the film Titanic. The 1997 version starring Leonardo di Caprio and Kate Blanchet.

After talking about the success of the movie we discussed some of the reviews it had received. For example:-

It ends with two young lovers riding the sinking ship as if it were a drowning bucking bronco.

And some of the inaccuracies in the plot:-

The "romantic" story is improbable as class distinction at the time meant the rules of the ship assured complete class segregation. Some contend that the film ended up with anti-British elements, portraying the British officers and crew as unethical and the Americans and Irish as heroic.

The film was criticised for its portrayal of a historical character, the ship's First Officer, William McMaster Murdoch. In his home town of Dalbeattie in Scotland there is a memorial to his heroism and a charitable prize has been established in his name. In the film he is portrayed as taking a bribe, killing passengers and finally committing suicide. 20th Century Fox admitted that the baseless slurs on his character were included only as story decisions, and contributed $8,000 to the prize fund.

Another aspect of the film, the way in which the third–class passengers were completely fenced in below decks, has been described as a myth. There is controversy on this point. It is true that lower percentage of third class passengers survived, but that could be simply because they had farther to go to get to the lifeboats.

We concluded by looking at the film's extremely successful title song by Celine Dion "My heart will go on".

Every night in my dreams
I see you, I feel you,
That is how I know you go on

Far across the distance
And spaces between us
You have come to show you go on

Near, far, wherever you are
I believe that the heart does go on
Once more you open the door
And you're here in my heart
And my heart will go on and on

Love can touch us one time
And last for a lifetime
And never let go till we're one

Love was when I loved you
One true time I hold to
In my life we'll always go on

Near, far, wherever you are
I believe that the heart does go on
Once more you open the door
And you're here in my heart
And my heart will go on and on

There is some love that will not go away

You're here, there's nothing I fear,
And I know that my heart will go on
We'll stay forever this way
You are safe in my heart
And my heart will go on and on

And yes, there was a bit of karaoke. Well done Meline!
