Millstone Round Your Neck

If someone is a millstone round your neck, it means they are a burden to you.

The idiom probably arises from the Bible: “And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea.” King James Bible Mark 9:42 . This method of execution was actually used in the past, a criminal would have a millstone tied around the neck and they were cast into the sea or a river.

Luckily this millstone isn’t round my neck, it’s simply lying on the ground and isn’t a burden to anyone.
