English in Use - Sleety City Bang Bang

A selection of headlines from stories in the news. They use English in a way that you might think is intended to confuse but it's all perfectly clear to the native speaker.

The Sun newspaper carried the headline of 'Sleety City Bang Bang'  on a story about 550 vintage cars which competed in the London to Brighton rally and were hit by a fierce rain storm with sleet in the middle of the capital. The headline is a play on Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, a 1964 Ian Fleming children's story about a sports car which was later turned into a hit film and musical. Sleet is a mixture of rain and snow.
