English in Use - 'I Tort I Saw A Torty'

A selection of headlines from stories in the news. They use English in a way that you might think is intended to confuse but it's all perfectly clear to the native speaker.

 

A Sun story about animal rescuers who were called to help a tortoise on a motorway only to find out that it was in fact a deflated football attracted the headline 'I Tort I Saw A Torty." This is play on 'I Taw A Putty Tat', the title of an 1948 animated cartoon starting Tweety Bird and Sylvester the Cat in which the bird can't enunciate certain letters.
