A selection of headlines from stories in the news. They use English in a way that you might think is intended to confuse but it’s all perfectly clear to the native speaker.

The Daily Mirror got all snobbish when it reported on a picture story about Geri Halliwell and Elton John, describing them as having the ‘common touch’ when it comes to fashion.  Geri was pictured in jogging bottoms and a puffa jacket with knee-high boots in London’s Hampstead High Street, and Elton was seen in New York wearing a black Adidas tracksuit and red rapper glasses.

The headline ‘Chavin It Large’ is a play on the word chav, a term used for working class teenagers with poor fashion sense, and ‘having it large’ which is slang for having a good time.
