According to a review by the Department of Culture, free internet access and e-books could help reverse a decline in the number of people using libraries in England. Sunday opening and coffee shops might also boost library use, and membership of one library should also provide access to other libraries.
Do these people go into libraries? My library in the UK has been providing free Internet access for years (if you can find a free terminal), so maybe they should provide free wifi access instead. I'm all for the Sunday opening and coffee shop, though I'm not sure a librarian is qualified to make a cappuccino and the machine would be told to 'shush' every time the milk was steamed. As for e-books, I don't think enough people have an e-reader, yet. Maybe libraries could issue an e-reader instead of a membership card, but they'd have to charge a deposit, otherwise they'd all turn up on eBay.
