A selection of headlines from stories in the news. They use English in a way that you might think is intended to confuse but it’s all perfectly clear to the native speaker.

The big story at the moment is the ongoing rescue of 33 miners in Chile, after 69 days of being trapped underground.  The Daily Express and the Daily Mirror both came up with the same play on words, miner and minor.

A miner is someone who works underground in a mine.

Minor is an adjective used to describe something of little importance or effect.

Of course the survival of these men isn’t a minor miracle it’s a major one, and just goes to show what the world can do when it cooperates for the greater good.

!Note – Minor as a noun is used to describe someone who is under age.
