A selection of headlines from stories in the news. They use English in a way that you might think is intended to confuse but it’s all perfectly clear to the native speaker.

This headline from the Daily Mirror illustrates a story about tory peer Howard Flight, who claimed welfare changes will encourage the poor to breed.  Talking about child benefit cuts, the former MP caused uproar by saying: “We’re going to have a system where the middle classes are discouraged from breeding because it’s jolly expensive, but for those on benefit there is every incentive. Well that’s not very sensible.”

It’s a play on the insult “bleeding idiot”, which is simply used to describe someone who is stupid.  The perfect title for this peer.
