British Accents

Research backs up something I have said for a long time, the way we speak has a huge influence on the way we are perceived.

People who come from around the Newcastle area are said to have a Geordie accent
Early in 2010, the Geordie accent was voted the sexiest in Britain. Researchers believe celebrities from Newcastle such as Cheryl Cole have helped raised the profile of the accent, making it seem more friendly and attractive.
People who come from around the Birmingham area are said to have a Brummie accent
A BBC survey suggested that people from the Midlands are most likely to suffer career setbacks because of the way they speak. It was voted the accent most likely to hinder progression in the workplace.
People who come from Scotland are said to have a Scottish accent
Scots were found to have the most reassuring accents in Britain. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution held a poll asking which accent people found most soothing in emergencies, although the research did not delve into the numerous regional varieties of the Scottish tongue.

People who come from around the Liverpool area are said to have a Scouse accent
Liverpudlians fared poorly in research carried out by the BBC. The accent was said to be viewed by respondents as “lacking in prestige” and the second most “unpleasant” to the ear.

People who come from Ireland are said to have an Irish accent
In 2009 the Irish accent on men was voted the world's sexiest. The popularity of stars such as Colin Farrell were said to be the cause of the accent's popularity. The Italian accent came second.
