A selection of headlines from stories in the news. They use English in a way that you might think is intended to confuse but it’s all perfectly clear to the native speaker.

The British like nothing more than a bit of sexual innuendo in their newspaper headlines hence ‘Match Of The Lay, Girls’ in the Daily Star. This is on a story that a survey has revealed that the favourite time for couples to have sex is 10.12pm on a Saturday evening, which almost coincides with BBC TV’s Match Of The Day football programme. The headline substitutes the word ‘day’ for the word ‘lay’, which is slang for having sex with someone.
