A selection of headlines from stories in the news. They use English in a way that you might think is intended to confuse but it’s all perfectly clear to the native speaker.
Watch out for a glut of ‘Royal’ headlines as we approach the date of the wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton at Westminster Abbey on April 29. The Daily Star’s headline of ‘Kate Middleton’s Visit Pans Out Well’ relates to a visit by the couple to a Shrove Tuesday charity event in Belfast where Kate is pictured tossing a pancake.
The headline is a play on the idiom ‘pans out’ which means ‘to happen or be successful.’
I have to say that is quite sickening when people clap someone for simply tossing a pancake.
