A selection of headlines from stories in the news. They use English in a way that you might think is intended to confuse but it’s all perfectly clear to the native speaker.

Headline writers love to use pop songs to inspire them. The Sun had a headline of ‘Relight My Ire’ on a story that Robbie Williams is being lined as a judge on a new BBC singing reality show The Voice in direct opposition to Gary Barlow who is in The X-Factor. The Sun used the 1992 Take That hit Relight My Fire but replaced the last word with ‘Ire’ (anger or wrath).
