A selection of headlines from stories in the news. They use English in a way that you might think is intended to confuse but it’s all perfectly clear to the native speaker.
For once we have a fun headline from the Guardian. The full headline is, Knit and Purrl: Battersea cats and their new toys, about the cat rescue centre “Battersea”, which put out an appeal for toys for the cats they are sheltering. The response from the public was lots and lots of knitted toys for their charges. The headline “Knit and Purrl” is a play on the most common knitting stitch “knit one purl one” and purr – the sound a cat makes when it’s happy.
