English In Use - 'On Your Marks...Get Set...Ho! Ho! Ho!'

A selection of headlines from stories in the news. They use English in a way that you might think is intended to confuse but it's all perfectly clear to the native speaker.

Now that we're into December, headline writers on the tabloid press will be busting a gut to get some seasonal flavour into their work. Hence The Sun's headline on a story about 8,000 people dressed as Santa taking part in a 5km charity road run in Liverpool: 'On Your Marks...Get Set...Ho! Ho! Ho!'

They replaced 'Go!', which is how races are traditionally started, with 'Ho! Ho! Ho!', which is what Santa is supposed to chuckle.  Aren't they clever?
