English In Use - 'Grand Nags and Glam Wags'

A selection of headlines from stories in the news. They use English in a way that you might think is intended to confuse but it;s all perfectly clear to the native speaker.

Mike d'Abo, lead singer of 60s band Manfred Mann, had a productive song when he wrote Handbags and Gladrags, It was a hit for Chris Farlowe and Rod Stewart and much later for The Stereophonics. It also provided the inspiration for the headline 'Grand Nags And Glam Wags' in the Daily Star on a story about ladies day at Aintree which stages The Grand National horse race every year. The article said the event was attended by a host of beauties (women that is) including Coleen Rooney, wife of the Manchester United footballer Wayne Rooney.

Nag is another word for horse and wag is an acronym used particularly by the British tabloid press to describe the "wives and girlfriends" of high-profile footballers.
