English In Use - 'What A Pay Day'

A selection of headlines from stories in the news. They use English in a way that you might think is intended to confuse but it's all perfectly clear to the native speaker.

Larry Grayson was a camp comedian, very popular on British TV in the 70s and 80s. One of his famous catchphrases was 'What A Gay Day', hence the Daily Star headline of 'What A Pay Day' on the story about a lucky gay couple, Ian Pearce and Lyn Sexton, from Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales, who won £1m on the Lottery.

!Note - Payday is the day on which wages or salaries are paid.
