EDC Mooc - Final Artefact and Peer Review

Having taken part in Edinburgh University's EdcMooc on Coursera, I just thought I'd share my final artefact (sort of the exam piece) here:-

Here are the peer reviews I received for this piece of work.  They are anonymous, so I don't think it's an issue, and I felt they were valid in any criticism.

Peer 1 → In general, a great achievement, at [least] for me, not being so into Second Life.

1. You managed to [address] one or more themes, and they were "under the surface" sometimes.  (You got that?  I can be subversive.)
2. Your understanding of how to use technologies is great, in the scenes old and new tech-stuff was visible. I missed the tension between human and technology a utopian vision!  (Mia culpa.  I am a bit +++ about the whole thing.)
3. Congratulations you showed a new way of education for me, one that looks exciting and opens up new [possibilities].  Well done.   (Thank you.  If you, whoever you are, do join SL, please get in touch. Nothing makes me happier than showing people round.)
4. By using the learning [environment] you were able to show some of the possibilities and guide us through this new world, great!, and sometimes the richness of the pictures made me wander through the pictures and my thoughts followed!   (This is what can happen.  Just imagine teaching about the parts of a bus and then letting your students drive the bus.  Okay so we crashed, but then we were able to talk about vocabulary to do with accidents.)
5. It for sure stimulated a reaction, the richness of the pictures made me wander away, wanting to see all the details, also thinking about what all the scenes were meant for..I got distracted.  (This is an issue, especially for newcomers, but it's all a chance to communicate and interact with the things around you.)

Peer 2 → Fantastic! Lots of themes addressed, clearly understood with confidence. I liked how you framed each of the comments from learners, and how each comment brought something new and relevant to the topic. It says a lot about (informal) digital education in a way that is novel and fascinating. The YouTube video was very clever and gave [an] ambience that explained more without text or audio. I enjoyed it a lot!

Peer 3 → The artefact addresses several of the themes of the course very competently. This demonstrates a thorough understanding of the key concepts of the course and has a great deal to say about digital education. The choice of media is definitely appropriate for the message. I didn't feel much of a reaction, apart from to think that the work is of a high standard.  (I'd love to know if you were already aware of Virtual Worlds, before seeing the video.)

Peer 4 → 1. yes; 2. yes; 3. yes; 4; yes; 5. yes, it's interesting.  (Short but sweet.)

Peer 1 → An artifact with rich graphics, a second world ready to wander away in.   (I often do.)

It looked almost like an advertisement for the learning environment.  (I agree, but after a year of using this environment, I am a complete convert.  Admittedly it's not for everyone, and there are negative sides to SL in general, but once you overcome the fear / reluctance it's worth every moment.)

I could see/feel the enthusiasm off the maker of this artifact and I got carried away, that's great. One tip I would like to give is to make choices more about the richness of the detail in the scenes, for me this sometimes distracted.  (The scenes in Virtlantis are deliberately rich in detail for an immersive experience.  You can control your environment though, as an educator and a learner, in a way that is impossible in a classroom environment.  The fact is you can get distracted here, quite easily, but you don't have to be.)

Peer 2 → Excellent. Well done.  (Thank you.)

Peer 3 → A very good piece of work, if a little uncritical. Good to see such initiatives at work.  (I agree, I could have presented the "darker" side of SL in general, but my experiences have been mostly positive, and that's the message I wanted to put out there.)

Peer 4 → Interesting reflection about learning in Second Life.  (Thank you.)

FYI - I got top marks.  Yay! Otherwise I would probably be sulking and not sharing.  😉
