English In Use – I’ll Be Bake

A selection of headlines from stories in the news. They use English in a way that you might think is intended to confuse but it’s all perfectly clear to the native speaker.

The broadsheet/quality newspapers normally don’t indulge in the sort of jokey/frivolous headlines so popular with the tabloid press, but The Independent came up with a real cracker on a short story that a cake depicting The Terminator star Arnold Schwarzenegger had been featured in the Cake International sugar craft, cake decorating and baking show at London’s ExCel Centre. The headline was ‘I’ll Be Bake’, a play on The Terminator’s catchphrase ‘I’ll Be Back”.
