English In Use - '31k To Wind Up The Queen'

A selection of headlines from stories in the news. They use English in a way that you might think is intended to confuse but it's all perfectly clear to the native speaker.

Sometimes the sub-editors come up with a headline which is deliberately misleading, one such is, '31k To Wind Up The Queen' in the Daily Mirror.

'To wind up' can mean to annoy or upset but in this case the headline refers to a story that Buckingham Palace is looking for a Royal Horological Conservator to wind up the Queen's 1,000 clocks and check they are always accurate, with an annual salary of £31,200.
