English In Use - 'The Fraud Mayor'

A selection of headlines from stories in the news. They use English in a way that you might think is intended to confuse but its all perfectly clear to the native speaker.

This clever headline comes from the Daily Star, for a story about a man who pretended to be the Mayor of Stafford.

He would go out wearing a chain of office and was so successful that he was invited to all sorts of shindigs, including opening the season at Alton Towers.

He was only found out when he posted a tweet about another mayor: “Sharing a meeting with the Mayor of Shrewsbury today. Never liked him. Reminds me of one of the bad guys from Superman 2", which was spotted by the stunned Mayor of Shrewsbury Jon Tandy who tweeted: “Never had the pleasure of meeting @mayorofstafford. Surprised by his tweet today. Maybe he was hacked or mistaken?”

The headline replaces "Lord" as in Lord Mayor (the title of the mayor in London and some other large British cities), with "Fraud", which describes criminal deception.

No one knows who he really is.
