Was 2016 the worst year ever?


Many people consider politics boring, but 2016 will be infamous for its plethora of political upheavals, ending on that startling note as the world watched the multi-billion dollar business mogul, Donald Trump, who had no previous political experience, elected as the 45th President of the United States. Didn’t see that one coming.

Adding to the hype of 2016, scandal after scandal unravelled in the political world – recall Hillary Clinton’s controversial emails? Feminists worldwide gained a huge win as female leadership came to office in lands that had previously been dominated by men. Viral stories in the UK included stories about Sadiq Khan, Queen Elizabeth, Theresa May, and David Cameron. Not so boring, wouldn’t you agree?


If we shine a spotlight on some of the viral news stories regarding commerce worldwide, we have to include Alphabet, Google’s parent company, which surpassed Apple as the world’s most valuable company. The top viral stories of the U.S. included the Forbes’ rich list naming Bill Gates as the most wealthy individual in the world, with a net worth of $75 billion. More than many countries.

The top viral stories of 2016 surfaced within the world of science with significant developments within research, microgravity, DNA testing, and mitochondrial transfer. There were several remarkable scientific discoveries. We also hit record breaking times for flight lengths and visits to and from space.

The Weather
Record snow volumes were recorded in twenty U.S. states in 2016, but to date, the month of February had the warmest temperatures ever recorded.

International News
The most popular international news stories of 2016 surfaced in countries such as Egypt, France, England, Scotland, the U.K. and the U.S.  Whilst news stories from Colombia, Brazil, Italy, and Venezuela all had a massive impact on the world stage.  And we discovered the oldest known case of neanderthal-human sex.

The multi-faceted area of sports in 2016 was a prosperous one as many athletes felt the high of victory and the honour of winning titles and awards on multiple occasions. Forbes’ list welcomed athlete Cristiano Ronaldo as the highest paid athlete, and Peyton Manning announced his retirement from the NFL. The NFL doesn’t need to worry though, as the Super Bowl announced revenues of over $620 million dollars.

For those that believe in the equality of all sexes and sexual orientation, the LGBT community celebrated the support from popular brands like Nike and Paypal, as well as the support that came from the U.S. defense.

There were numerous moments to celebrate within the Culture of 2016. Mother Teresa, a highly respected figure in the Catholic community, was canonized by Pope Francis.

The Sellout, a book by Paul Beatty was named winner of the 2016 Man Booker Prize for fiction.

More top viral stories of 2016 include ground breaking discoveries in the fields of science, technology, and astronomy.

Finally, we have the world of entertainment. The top viral stories of 2016 included the release of many successful movies that earned prosperous numbers which broke revenue records. The fantasy films include Star wars, Batman VS. Superman, and Harry Potter. Well known celebrities such as Beyonce and Honey G made viral headlines while BBC three became the first uk television network to have an online only outreach.

Last, but not least, let us remember how the release of Pokemon Go went viral.  A game that had had little or no marketing prior to its release, and yet it took the world by storm.

So, there you have it – some of the most significant events of 2016 that should not go unnoted. For any pessimists out there who deem 2016 to be the worst year ever, I think this comprehensive list proves otherwise.
