English In Use – ‘Hasta La Vista, PPI’

A selection of headlines from stories in the news. They use English in a way that you might think is intended to confuse but it’s all perfectly clear to the native speaker.

‘Hasta La Vista, Baby’ is an iconic catchphrase from Arnold Schwarzenegger’s title character in the 1991 sci-fi film Terminator 2: Judgment Day. The headline writers at The Guardian newspaper have pinched it for their headline of ‘Hasta La Vista, PPI’ on a story that a robotic head of Schwarzenegger is to be used in a £42 million advertising campaign by the Financial Conduct Authority about making complaints about payment protection insurance irregularities.
