A picture paints a thousand words, and linking a new word to a picture is a good way of remembering it. Try searching Google Images for the word.
For example: Search for the word "tarpaulin" in Google Images and you'll find lots of pictures of tarpaulins.
You can even draw or print out the best one you find, or find the item in real life and take a photo. Stick it on a flash card - picture one side - word the other: That way you can test yourself later.
