A selection of headlines from stories in the news. They use English in a way that you might think is intended to confuse but it’s all perfectly clear to the native speaker.

Nice play on the word ‘nothing’ in The Sun’s headline about swimmers coming face to face with a giant 23 foot shark just off the beach at Gwenver, Cornwall. Some dashed for the shore, fearful of a Jaws-like attack as the fin broke the surface, but it turned out to be a harmless basking shark, which only eats plankton.

The headline was ‘Don’t Panic! There’s No Fin To Worry About’.

A fin is the thin vertical part sticking out of the body of a fish, and you might hear young people say “nuffin”, which is slang for “nothing”.
